3FF (Arlington, VA): Hey Gary, I know there is a lot of strong competition for Best GM of the year, but is there anyone even onthe same planet as Dan O'Brien for worst GM in baseball?

Gary Gillette: (2:17 PM ET ) There is competition, to be sure, but Dan's way out front in the worst-GM derby right now.

    Quote:
Jared (KY): Will the Reds have an above .500 pitcher at years end?

Gary Gillette: (2:03 PM ET ) Hey Jared--I think the real question is whether the Reds will have a new GM by the end of the season. Unfortunately for Reds fans, they might not.

    Quote:
jake(philly): Hey Gary who do you see playing cf for the yanks any possibility that griffey can end up in pinstripes?thanks

Gary Gillette: (2:27 PM ET ) Anyone but Bernie after that shaky performance in Texas on Monday night.

Gary Gillette: (2:28 PM ET ) Griffey is unlikely to end up in NYC wearning pinstripes so long as Reds GM Dan O'Brien is grossly unrealistic about what he wants in return

    Quote:
Gary Gillette: (2:29 PM ET ) If Jr. continues to hit as well as he has so far in July (1.305 OPS), it's possible someone will be willing to take a chance on his health, but O'B has got to be more sensible about how much the Reds can get in return if they want the other club to pick up a majority of Griffey's salary

    Quote:
nick (seattle): i know the m's are out of it, but considering the need a lefty power bat why dont they go after adam dunn with a package of piniero and prospects?

Gary Gillette: (2:32 PM ET ) I doubt that Seattle would go after Dunn. Dunn's rep is tarnished by his high K numbers--unfairly so, but it's still true. And they wouldn't risk Dunn's defense in LF at SAFECO

    Quote:
Steven (LA): What about the GM from the DRays, he has to be the worst

Gary Gillette: (2:35 PM ET ) Steven, you and several others have been barking about LaMar since I made the comment about O'Brien. I think LaMar is one of the worst GMs of all-time, no question.

Gary Gillette: (2:36 PM ET ) But right now, he's not killing a viable team like O'Brien has done to the Reds in the past year.

    Quote:
3FF (Arlington, VA): Would Griffey in Cincy be bad for the Reds?

Gary Gillette: (2:41 PM ET ) No. Griffey isn't killing the Reds right now, their pitching and Sean Casey are killing them.

    Quote:
Mike(Westifeld): Where do you think griffey would be most likely to end up?

Gary Gillette: (2:39 PM ET ) Cincy.

    Quote:
Matt (Whitesboro, NY): Do you see the Braves making any major trades? Griffey would be a good fit with not having to play centerfield and the Braves have a lot of good prospects.

Gary Gillette: (2:50 PM ET ) I agree that it's long past time for Griffey to move to RF or LF, but there's no guarantee that he'd accept that move

Instead of adding a starting pitcher, the Orioles could look to bolster their already potent offense. One club official said they asked the Cincinnati Reds about slugger Adam Dunn, but the Reds told them their asking price started with Bedard.

The Reds have frustrated many teams with their high demands. When the Twins inquired about third baseman Joe Randa last month, Cincinnati came back asking for one of three young pitchers: Jesse Crain, Francisco Liriano or Scott Baker.

The Twins, of course, declined. As desperate as they are for an offensive jolt, they refuse to mortgage their future.

The Orioles, who missed a chance to return to first place in the AL East on Tuesday, are being careful, too. With 11 days to the nonwaiver trade deadline a lot of things can change.

"We believe we're a contender right now," Orioles shortstop Miguel Tejada said. "We've got Bedard back. [Catcher Javy Lopez] is coming back. Everyone says we're going to be good."

    From Gammons' chat on ESPN.com:

rob(houston): your thoughts on a possible dunn to houston deal?

Peter Gammons: (4:13 PM ET ) Dunn to Houston isn't happening. Every team that has called about Adam Dunn or Austin Kearns has been told that they are not available.

    THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

CINCINNATI — If a trade is in the immediate future for Ken Griffey Jr., the Reds center fielder said yesterday that he has made up his mind to set aside his emotions while examining whatever management proposes.

"I’ve got to look at it two ways," Griffey said. "I know it’s somewhat a financial situation. I’ve also got to look at it not being bitter at the Reds for doing it but looking forward to the team that wants me."

The Reds, he added, have not approached him about any deal. As a 10-year veteran with five years on the same team, Griffey has the right to veto any trade.

"I don’t really think about those things," he said. "I’m going out there to do what I can to help this team. If something happens, we’ll cross that bridge when it does. For right now, I’m a Cincinnati Red."

When Griffey signed his nineyear, $116.5 million contract with the Reds in February 2000, he planned to end his career with his hometown team. Much has changed since then. Between 2001-04, he endured four injuryplagued seasons. His ’04 season ended with surgery to reattach his right hamstring to the bone.

The Reds also have not had a winning season since 2000 and are in last place in the National League Central. With the non-waiver trade deadline coming July 31, Griffey realizes that changes are coming to the team.

The irony in the team’s failures surrounds the resurgence of a now-healthy Griffey. He entered the game last night against the Chicago Cubs with a .289 batting average, 20 home runs and 62 RBI. Opponents appear to be pitching around him again.

"No, that’s mainly because I’ve been a little more selective at the plate," Griffey said. "That makes all the difference in the world. I’m tracking the ball a little better out of the hand of the pitcher."

Third baseman Joe Randa, who bats fifth behind Griffey, thinks otherwise.

"A lot of times they’re pitching around him to face me," Randa said. "He’s a huge force in our lineup. If the guy behind him in the lineup is not producing, they’re not going to pitch to him. I’m aware of it. His record speaks for itself, and right now he’s on top of his game."

Griffey is playing with one reminder of the ’04 surgery. Blood still seeps from the incision and occasionally stains his uniform pants. Cubs fans pointed it out during the game Monday night. Griffey shrugged.

"It only hampers my wardrobe," he said, smiling. "There are certain things I won’t wear. I wear dark jeans most of the time due to the fact that if it does start leaking people don’t get grossed out."

Damn, that cut still leaks? Someone isn't very good at stitching people up...

Also, am I the only one immensely amused by the national media taking shots at the Reds front office? It just seems like something that hasn't been made nearly public enough.

I heard with a lot injuries like that, what's happening to Griffey is pretty common. That being said, I hope anyone who said Griffey didn't have heart, didn't love baseball, etc.... is having a huge portion of crow.
