Konerko's Staying Put!

The White Sox reached a preliminary agreement with first baseman Paul Konerko on a three-year deal, reports Bob Nightengale of USA Today. The deal is worth about $37.5MM, tweets SI's Jon Heyman. The contract includes deferred money, as outlined by MLB.com's Scott Merkin.

Konerko gets a slight raise, but still falls short of Adam Dunn's new deal with the Sox. Konerko is represented by Craig Landis of LSW Baseball. GM Kenny Williams talked about moving on yesterday, but chairman Jerry Reinsdorf got involved.

Konerko, 35 in March, led all free agents with 39 home runs in 2010. He hit .312/.393/.584 in 631 plate appearances, perhaps the best season of his career. He's been Chicago's first baseman since '99.

I read a couple of weeks ago a great article on foxsports.com about the lack of outrage from fans about Konerko possibly leaving the White Sox. Everyone was talking about Jeter leaving when the odds of that happening were Mary Kate and Ashley thin but Konerko's chances of leaving were much, much greater. I couldn't have agreed more with the author of that article. Konerko had a great year last year and will now be keeping his talents in Chicago. It's also great to see that he is not getting some outrageous raise. I think this deal is perfect. The years and money are just right and Konerko has already said he is fine DHing from time to time. Great job by the White Sox keeping their best hitter.

According to the advanced statistics, Konerko is bad. But he's a good player, a good hitter, type of professional that fits in with this lineup. I think the idea of having Rios, Quentin, Alexei Ramirez, Dunn, Beckham and Konerko in a lineup out weighs whatever liabilities he might have for the Sox.

Says who? If I was an owner wouldnt matter to me. I'd still be a Reds fan but I would want what was best for business. Baseball might move divisions and move Houston out. Eventually.
