Guillen extended until 2012

White Sox signed manager Ozzie Guillen to a multiyear contract extension through the 2012 season.
Five more years? Well, it's not Ken Williams' money, so what does he care? It's certainly not going to have any effect on his budget for signing players. Locking up Guillen creates an aura of stability that may prove useful when it's time to sign free agents this winter. There's hardly any chance that Guillen will actually last the full five years, but this will deflect some controversy through at least the first half of 2008. If he needs to be fired next year or in 2009, it's still only a minor hit to Jerry Reinsdorf's wallet.

That's not exactly Ozzie's fault. The entire offense went into the tank this year (not something a lineup adjustment can fix), and the bullpen he was given to work with was Jenks with nothing to bridge to him, with only 2 dependable starters.

Listen I know the main reason you'll always back up Ozzie is because of he made fun of the writer you hate most. Not the point though, the team went from 90 (and under achieved) in 2006 to one of the worst records in 2007. Not to mention most of the players are sick of him in general. Who wants to work for an @$$hole? Sounds great for trying to get FA's "Well if we don't win, you get a full year of Ozzie."

Like Porter said, if you don't perform why are you getting a big pay day? Even if the White Sox believed in him. Wouldn't they want to say "Hey we'll go out and fix this team for you in 2008. Win with it, and you get your money." Hell Ozzie has asked SEVERAL times this year to be fired in various interviews. So it's actually surprising he took the extension.

No, the reason I'll always back Ozzie is that shiny hunk of metal for which you've been waiting for nearly a century. The 2006 team did not underachieve, it simply had no bridge to Bobby Jenks, which was why it lost so many games in the late innings. Kenny Williams went out and tried to fix that over the winter, but wound up missing on a bunch of arms filled with potential with little results to that point, and, when none of those arms reached their potential, giving the 2007 team the same problem, only now the entire offense decided to go into the tank. When given the components necessary to win, Ozzie has shown he can and will win. You can't expect any manager to win with no bullpen and no offense though, and that's basically what happened to Ozzie this year.
