Joe sure has a way of talking. Enjoyed listening to him in the highlights.

I'd like to be wrong but I don't see them breaking out of this drought anytime soon even with this move. Piniella couldn't do it for em' and neither could Popeye.
Lou Pinella is irrelevant to Maddon's chances as the entire franchise has practically been overhauled from top to bottom since he had the team.

Prynce is even less knowledgable in baseball that football
Marshall: MILSWANCAs?
Ted: Wait, I can get this. Mothers I'd like to sleep with and never call again.
Barney: Circle gets the square!
The 2074 MSL NL Gold Glove Recipient at Third Base.
What I'm saying is I don't think this managerial move is going to bring them any holy grails like the media seems to already be hyping up towards. They had a great manager and a great team in 2008 that I really thought had a good chance at at least making it to the NLCS with all the talent that they had that year but only got swept. Joe Maddon is already calling playoffs and world series. Kudos to him if he can but there's a losing culture that's hindering those chances. It's like asking Belichick to take the Raiders to the playoffs.
What I'm saying is that what Lou Pinella did with the Cubs is irrelevant to what Joe Maddon can or cannot do with the Cubs because, aside from maybe Sterlin Castro, there's nothing the same about the entire organization.
You can have whatever opinion you like of Maddon's chances, but what Lou Pinella did with the Cubs is as relevant to the conversation as what Bud Black has done with the Padres thus far.

Which was in no way off topic since the thread is about the press conference in which Joe Maddon is already talking World Series.
If Belichick took over the Raiders and started calling Superbowl in his press conference would you not be in here saying that he's probably wrong.

I can't say that Joe will be able to inspire a miracle like the worst to first Rays in 2008, but at least on paper and financially he has a lot more to work with in Chicago than he probably EVER had here in Tampa Bay. The Rays have seen 3 postseasons since then with basically an often hurt franchise player and ace and a half, a bunch of platoons and cast off relievers.
If the Cubs fail to at least get some truly successful runs under him it won't be Joe, it will be because not all are on board with jumping on the crazy train. it will be guys that balk about a Llama in the clubhouse saying "WTF!!!" instead of "Oooooh, can we pet the Llama??"
Btw, having Lou Piniella before Joe Maddon means nothing, we had them back to back and the vibe was completely different even before the winning season.
Well John Gruden is far from the coach Belichick is so of course you wouldn't but that wasn't the point.
A managerial move IMO isn't the determining factor between this team ending their drought.
If the Raiders had Belichick for 8 years and couldn't smell even 8 wins then fired him for Bill Parcells after cleaning house people would start to doubt that a coaching change is anywhere near the solution.
The point wasn't about the relative difference in coaching ability between Gruden and Belichick, it was about the relevance to the current state of the team John Gruden has to the Raiders and the ability of any new head coach to win with them. (which is none)
The Cubs have gone through massive overhaul since Pinella was the manager of the Cubs. This isn't just a managerial change being made and expected to be the sole difference. The managerial change is just one of many that have taken place.
If the Raiders had Belichick for 8 years and couldn't smell 8 wins then fired him for Bill Parcells while also overhauling the entire organization from top to bottom I'd give them the benefit of the doubt you're not providing the Cubs here.
