Official: Hoyer and McLeod Hired

The Chicago Cubs and San Diego Padres jointly announce today that Jed Hoyer and Jason McLeod will leave the Padres, effective immediately, to accept positions with the Cubs. The Cubs have agreed to send the Padres a player to be named later as compensation.

Both the Cubs and the Padres intend to hold press conferences after the World Series. The Cubs intend to announce Hoyer as Executive Vice President/General Manager and McLeod as Senior Vice President/Scouting and Player Development, while the Padres intend to announce Josh Byrnes as Hoyer's successor.


Out of respect for the World Series, both clubs have agreed to forego further comment until holding their respective news conferences after the World Series is complete.

I have to agree with SI's Jon Heyman. This is a great trade

Jason McLeod as Senior Vice President/Scouting and Player Development is a real interesting title.

Before this move those titles went to:

Vice President, Player Personnel: Oneri Fleita
Director, Amateur & Professional Scouting: Tim Wilken

Fleita said when he got the extension. Whatever the new GM wanted him to do he'd move to that position. Ricketts needed him to complete the Dominican complex. He wasn't going anywhere. So he's going to fill some roll. I wonder what this means for Tim Wilken. He's a valuable asset. I would hope we can extend him and pay him enough that he can still do what he's good at. Though I'm perfectly happy with McLeod having the final call on this stuff. Wilken may not want to work under someone. If he does our scouting department is that much stronger.

I really hope Wilken looks at the big picture here. He could be a part of something special. I'd hate to see him go, but if that's what he wants, you gotta let him go. McLeod should do wonders with or without him.

Wilken is one of the best at what he does, but he does it a different way than McLeod. Theo is big on having different point of views so I think he'd fit in perfectly. We know Ricketts loves him. So maybe they let him keep his scouting director title, and give him a raise. I think as long as they respect him and let him remain heavily involved he can be a part of this. Not to mention I'm sure Wilken has a bunch of scouts he uses. Combine that with whoever McLeod adds and you have two networks of information coming in.

I hope when they do the Hoyer GM press conferences they ask about McLeod's role and how that chances what Fleita and Wilken are asked to do.

As the Cubs continue expanding their front office, sources say they are close to adding Arizona Diamondback scout Joe Bohringer as pro scouting coordinator. He's a 1993 graduate of MIT's Sloan School of Management, and like new GM Theo Epstein believes in making decisions informed by both scouting and statistical analysis.

I saw this the other day and it got me thinking. Besides the Cubs usually having the smallest front office around. Wrigley is very old and doesn't have a lot of office space. All these people, work spaces, ect. that stuff matters. I'm not even sure what type of internet the Cubs have. It's going to be rough unless we get that triangle building sorted out in the near future. Chances are we might be building the largest front office and it's gonna be tight in Wrigley.
