Re: 11/12 Offseason: Fixing the Cubs

But Ryne is, by all accounts, a good manager and great with the younger players. He has paid his dues and was even named PCL Manager of the Year last season. There is nothing wrong with small ball when you have the players that can do it. No market is too big for small ball and besides, he was managing minor league #3 and #4 players. He was probably just humbling them which is smart to do. Look, the Cubs are going to have to rebuild before the Cubs get better and who better to do that than a manager who is good with younger players. No manager is an impossible fire and Sandberg will always be loved by Cubs fans. No one "has" to smear guys on their way out. I think Sandberg would be a good hire because he has paid the price, a good manager and exactly what the Cubs need at this point. Cubs are a long way from contending and not even the ghost of Connie Mack or John McGraw is going to change that. You keep focusing on the negative but what if he does an amazing job? Wouldn't you rather him do it in a Cubs uniform rather than somewhere else?

Re: 11/12 Offseason: Fixing the Cubs

I'd rather not focus on the "what-if's". Maybe I've just seen too many terrible managers in my days as a Cubs fan.

I'd rather have him in a Cubs uniform as a bench or base coach. Let him learn what it takes to run a major league club. Four or five seasons in the minors isn't enough for me to hand him the big league job. If Theo and Hoyer think he's the right guy for the job, so be it. I won't be upset. I just think it'll be a mistake, and I'll hope that I'm wrong.

Look, the Cubs are going to have to rebuild before the Cubs get better and who better to do that than a manager who is good with younger players.
You don't have to tell me the Cubs are going to have to rebuild. I know, man.

But everything negative about Ryne you have said is a "what-if".

If you know it's a rebuild, then why not rebuild with a guy you know does well with young players and has managed most of them? What do the Cubs have to lose?

At this point, if you hire Sandberg , you have to stick with him for some time. You can't fire Quade whose got one year left on his deal to bring in a guy you have no idea is right for the job. Just because he knows some of the kids on the big league roster doesn't instantly make him the best candidate. Sure, if I truly believed that the Cubs were a total overhaul/rebuild or four/five years away from competing then I wouldn't be against bringing Ryno in to see what he's got. But I don't think it's going to take even close to that long. I'd rather bring in a guy who I am totally confident in for the long haul, like Tito, or Maddon.

Ryne is a good candidate regardless, knowing those young guys is just icing on the cake. Cubs fans would turn on TERRY (Sorry, I just hate when people call him Tito since that's his father) before they turned on Ryno since it will take a few years to get this team competitive. Fans would want instant success with a guy like Francona and that's just not going to happen. Maddon's just a pipe dream.

Where did I say the fans would turn on Ryno? I don't think the fans will turn on the next manager for a while. The average fan seems to understand that the team needs some time to build. And I agree that Maddon is a pipedream, but so was Theo in September, so I can still hope lol

Like I said, if Theo and Hoyer think Sandberg is the best choice I'll accept it, regardless of how I feel.

Go back and read it again, I said he'd be impossible to fire without the fans turning on him, if it turned out he wasn't the right choice for the job.

I said you referenced it. My point remains, fans would turn on Terry before Ryno since it will take some time to get this team near the top. I find Ryno to be the best candidate.

Sure it does, but it has nothing to do with anything I have said.

    And that's fine. I disagree.

Lol I agree with most of what you're saying, besides Ryno being the best candidate.

I think the majority of fans are buying into Theo's process that this will take time. So I don't think the fans will be turning on the next manager any time soon. Sure they will turn on other managers before they would on Ryno. That's just obvious.

Welp, any idea of Dempster opting out is over. I don't mind this at all. Without Dempster the only sure thing in the rotation would be Garza.

I was really hoping he'd opt out. That money would be better spent else where. I wouldn't call Dempster a sure thing. He's 35 and coming off a bad year. He pitched better when the games didn't matter anymore. Keep in mind I like Dempster. I think he's a good addition to the clubhouse. If we could have convinced him to bypass the option and give him like $14-$18 mil for 2 years I'd have been much happier.
