June 12, 2005 - Peoria, IL - The Peoria Chiefs fell short in their attempt to sweep Beloit, as the Snappers beat the Chiefs 3-1 in front of 3,860 on Sunday afternoon at O’Brien Field. The loss drops the Chiefs back to .500 at 32-32.
Beloit scored in the 2nd inning on an RBI double down the left field line by shortstop Trevor Plouffe off Chiefs starter Jesse Estrada. The double scored first baseman Chris Brown from first. The Snappers stretched their lead to 3-0 one inning later on a two-run triple from David Winfree to score Luke Hughes and Midwest League all-star Deacon Burns.
The Chiefs offense struggled all afternoon but got on the board in the 7th on a Luis Montanez leadoff home run that cleared the netting in left field bounced onto Jefferson Street. He now has six home runs on the season. Bo Flowers and Oscar Bernard added singles in the inning with nobody out but were stranded in scoring position with the score at 3-1.
Peoria threatened one last time in the 8th, as Anthony Granato led off the inning with a walk and moved to third on a stolen base and throwing error. He was stranded at third after strikeouts to Ryan Harvey and Montanez.
Anthony Swarzak picked up the victory for the Snappers, his seventh of the season. Jose Mijares got the save, working three scoreless innings of relief with five strikeouts. Jesse Estrada took the loss for the Chiefs, falling to 3-6. He allowed three runs on six hits in five innings.

Luis Montanez (LF) - Montanez hit a towering home run that bounced onto Caterpillar’s front lawn in the 7th inning to get the Chiefs on the board. He finished the day 1-for-3.

Ahh thanks, twas before my time. Doesn't sound too hot though as that was 5 years ago and he should be making more progress .

Harvey Leads Chiefs Over .500
June 11, 2005 - Peoria, IL - The Peoria Chiefs came from behind for the third night in a row to defeat the Beloit Snappers 7-4 in front of 5,189 fans Saturday night at O'Brien Field. The victory puts the Chiefs above .500 for the first time this season at 32-31.
Beloit struck first in the 2nd inning for a 1-0 lead when Chiefs starter Sean Gallagher got into trouble, as he hit Trevor Plouffe, the Snappers number nine hitter, with a pitch with the bases loaded to force home a run. Gallagher got two infield popouts and a flyout to get out of the bases loaded jam surrendering just one run.
The Chiefs tied the game at 1-1 in the 3rd inning when Oscar Bernard scored on an Eric Patterson groundout. Bernard had reached on a bunt single to lead off the inning. The Snappers regained the lead with a pair of runs in the 5th inning on an RBI double from Chris Brown and an RBI groundout from first baseman Mark Zamojc.
Peoria bounced back in the bottom of the 5th to take the lead for good on an RBI double from Sam Fuld that scored Oscar Bernard from first. The ball hit by Fuld landed just in front of Beloit right fielder Jeremy Pickrel and skipped away far enough for the run to score. Ryan Harvey hit a line drive three-run home run to left field just three batters later to score Fuld and Aaron Sisk to give the Chiefs a 5-3 lead.
Two insurance runs came for the Chiefs in the 6th on a two-run single from Patterson for a 7-3 lead. The Snappers threatened in the 9th on a solo home run from Plouffe to lead off the inning. Two more Snappers reached base before Tim Layden entered the game and retired the only two batters he faced for the save.
Gallagher picked up the win for the Chiefs, running his record to 7-1. He went five innings and allowed three runs. Layden recorded the save, his second of the season. Beloit starter David Shinskie fell to 0-4, taking the loss.

Three All-Stars Lead Chiefs Past Swing
June 14, 2005 - Davenport, IA- All-Stars Ryan Harvey and Eric Patterson provided the offense and Chris Shaver shut down the Swing over seven innings as the Peoria Chiefs defeated Quad Cities 6-1 Tuesday night at John O'Donnell Stadium. With the win the Chiefs are back over .500 at 33-32 on the season with five games left in the half.
The Chiefs jumped all over Swing starter Donnie Smith in the third inning. San Fuld drew a one out walk and advanced to second on a single to center by Eric Patterson. Aaron Sisk gave the Chiefs a 1-0 lead with a double just inside the third base line as Fuld scored from second and Patterson stopped at third. After fouling off four consecutive two-strike pitches, Ryan Harvey slammed a three-run homer to left-center for a 4-0 Chiefs lead. The homer, Harvey’s ninth of the season traveled well over 420 feet and went down a concourse sidewalk toward the Mississippi River.
Two innings later, Patterson drove a solo leadoff homer into the batters eye in straight away center to extend Peoria’s lead to 5-0. The homer was the second baseman’s fifth of the season and the Chiefs’ eighth in their last five games.
With the score still 5-0 Peoria, Chris Shaver cruised through the Swing lineup until the 6th. With two outs in the 6th, Rick Ankiel, a former Chiefs pitcher, crushed a solo homer down the right-field line to get the Swing on the board. The blast was the outfielders 5th of the season in 17 games.
The Chiefs added the game’s final run in the 9th against former Chiefs and 2005 All-Star Jaymie Torres. Fuld led off with a double and scored ahead of the cut off throw after Patterson doubled off the wall in center.
Shaver (3-5) responded by retiring the next four batters he faced in his outing. He finished with his second seven inning outing of the season and allowed just one run on five hits while striking out one.
Playoff Watch
With five games to play, the Chiefs are one of five teams in position for the two Western Division playoff spots. The Chiefs are now 33-32, one half game behind Quad Cities for third place. The two top teams, Wisconsin and Clinton were in a rain delay in the 4th inning at Clinton with the home team up 11-0. Wisconsin started the day with a one game lead of Clinton with the Chiefs four back of first and three back of the wild card.

Ryan Harvey (RF)- Harvey crushed a three-run homer in the third inning to give the Chiefs a 4-0 lead. Harvey added doubles in both the 5th and 7th innings for his 12th multi-hit game of the season. Harvey finished 3-for-5 with two doubles, a homer, a run scored and three RBI.
Notes… The Chiefs have homered in five straight games, a season high….This is the second time all season the Chiefs have been over .500…Patterson now has 21 multi-hit games and eight 3-hit games on the season…Luis Montanez has hit safely in eight straight games…The two teams will play the final game of the three game Davenport series on Wednesday at 7:00 PM…Grant Johnson will make his second start of the year for the Chiefs while RHP Matt Scherer starts for the Swing…The Chiefs and Swing will finish the half with a four game series at O'Brien Field which begins Thursday night at 7:00…All Chiefs games can be heard on AM 1350 WOAM and www.peoriachiefs.com.
Patterson and Harvey are solid prospects. Going to be fun to watch them get better and move up the ranks.

Chiefs Fall Back to .500 with 5-2 Loss
June 28, 2005 - Peoria, IL - The Peoria Chiefs jumped out to a 2-0 lead after three innings against the Cedar Rapids Kernels but could not hold on as the Kernels scored five unanswered runs on their way to a 5-2 win Tuesday night at O'Brien Field.
The Chiefs scored in the 2nd inning as Luis Montanez led off the inning with a line drive double down the left field line. Two batters later, Sam Fuld hit a double over the head of Kernels center fielder Josh LeBlanc to score Montanez for a 1-0 lead. Aaron Sisk singled to score Aaron Smith in the 3rd inning for a 2-0 lead, as Smith doubled down the left field line to start the inning. Sisk was tagged out trying to stretch the single into a double. A pair of flyouts ended the threat for the Chiefs.
Cedar Rapids answered with three runs in the top of the 4th inning. Leadoff batter Alexis Casilla got things started with a bunt single, followed by a Freddy Sandoval double to score Casilla to trim the deficit to 2-1. Michael Collins added an RBI single to tie the game at 2-2 before a sacrifice fly to center from Nate Sutton gave the Kernels a 3-2 lead.
The Kernels got a single run in the 5th on an RBI single from Casilla and then scored again in the 7th after Chiefs reliever Drew Dickson walked in a run in his Chiefs debut.
The 5-2 lead held up for Cedar Rapids, as the Chiefs squandered a leadoff double from Alan Rick in the 8th inning. Rick was tagged out in between second and third base on an Aaron Smith ground ball. Ryan Harvey was robbed of extra bases in the 9th inning when Kernels right fielder Jordan Renz made a catch on the run in the right-center field gap.
Matt Weber took a no-hitter into the 4th inning before allowing four runs on six hits taking the loss. His record drops to 3-8 on the year. Cedar Rapids starter Karl Gelinas was outstanding in picking up the victory, allowing two runs on six hits in eight innings. He threw 108 pitches, issuing no walks and striking out two. Ronnie Ray picked up his first save of the season after working a perfect 9th inning.

Sam Fuld (CF) -The Chiefs center fielder went 1-for-3 with an RBI double in the 2nd inning to extend his hit streak to 10 games. Fuld now has 14 doubles on the season.

Johnson Earns 1st Win as Chiefs Beat Kernels 3-0
June 29, 2005 - Peoria, IL - Peoria Chiefs starting pitcher Grant Johnson pitched six strong innings in leading the Chiefs to a 3-0 win over the Cedar Rapids Kernels in front of 1,732 Wednesday night at O'Brien Field. The victory puts the Chiefs back over .500 at 4-3 in the second half and 39-38 overall.
The Chiefs scored all three runs in the bottom of the 4th inning. Ryan Harvey started the inning with a double down the left field line, just past third baseman Freddy Sandoval. Drew Larsen singled two batters later to score Harvey and give the Chiefs a 1-0 lead. Newcomer Joe Simokaitis recorded his first career RBI later in the inning as he reached on a fielder’s choice that scored Larsen. A throwing error by Kernels shortstop Jason Ramos allowed Anthony Granato to move to third on the play, as Granato scored an unearned run on a Bo Flowers single to make the score 3-0.
Johnson pitched himself into a jam in the 1st inning after walking the bases loaded. He got a groundout, a popout, and a strikeout to end the inning. Johnson did not allow a hit until the 6th inning when Sandoval doubled high off the left field wall with one out. He was stranded at second as Johnson once again got out of the inning without allowing a run.
Adalberto Mendez pitched two scoreless innings of relief in getting the game to Jerry Blevins, who pitched a scoreless 9th for the Chiefs. He walked leadoff batter Josh LeBlanc before striking out the side in recording his 13th save of the season.

Grant Johnson (RHP) - The Chiefs starting pitcher pitched six scoreless innings, allowing one hit in picking up his first professional victory. He set a career-high with six strikeouts and matched his career-high in innings pitched with six. He’s now 1-1 on the year.
Notes… Johnson threw 89 pitches…The victory moves the Chiefs to 14-11 in June, guaranteeing a winning record in the month…The 3-0 victory is the first shutout for the Chiefs since a 1-0 win over Dayton on May 21st…The Burlington Bees come to town tomorrow for the first of four games at O'Brien Field…It’s a Budweiser Thirsty Thursday and Ladies' Night with first pitch scheduled for 7 PM…The pre-game show will begin at 6:30 on 1350 WOAM and www.peoriachiefs.com.
Sweetness! Joe Simokatis is AWESOME. I loved him at Nebraska. Great defensive SS and ended up becoming pretty decent at the plate. Walked 4 times in his last college game while also getting a single. Really excited to get to follow him here now.
