ATLANTA (AP) -- Chicago Cubs starter Ted Lilly was ejected with two out in the first inning after hitting Atlanta shortstop Edgar Renteria with a pitch on Sunday night.
Renteria quickly retaliated, hitting Cubs second baseman Mike Fontenot in the face with his right hand as he slid into second base on a successful stolen base attempt with the next hitter, Andruw Jones, at the plate.
Jones grounded out against right-hander Carlos Marmol -- Lilly's replacement -- to end the inning.
Lilly had a 2-0 count on Renteria when he plunked him near the left shoulder. Renteria took a couple of steps toward the mound before home-plate umpire Jim Wolf and Cubs catcher Michael Barrett stepped in front of him to prevent a fight.
Both benches emptied, but no punches were thrown.
In the Braves' 9-5 victory on Saturday, Atlanta starter Tim Hudson hit Cubs leadoff hitter Alfonso Soriano with a pitch in the back. The day before, Soriano hit three homers in a 9-1 win.
Renteria homered and drove in four runs on Saturday.
Lilly threw 10 pitches, striking out two.
Renteria on a tag at 2nd punches Fontenot with a right hand on a tag, should Renteria still be in the game? There is alot of bad blood between the two team, should be an interesting to watch this for the rest of the season.
