    Wood Signs 1 Yr Deal

Cubs re-signed RHP Kerry Wood to a one-year, $1.75 million contract.
According to MLB.com, the incentives in the deal aren't worth $6 million, but can instead bring the value to the deal up to $6 million. So, they're worth $4.25 million. The official breakdown still isn't available, but the incentives are based on active time on the 25-man roster, appearances and games finished, which further emphasizes how Wood will be used next season. The Cubs might let him contend for the closer's role whether they trade Ryan Dempster or not.
Why are/would the Cubs trying to trade Demspter?

i dont think they are actively seeking to trade dempster. unless he struggles throughout spring training and the early months.

signing wood is not a bad move since he takes a spot of one of our crappy middle relievers. since its so heavily incentive laden, there isnt much risk whatsoever with salary considerations.

I agree. Kerry Wood, when on, is one of the best pitchers in the bigs. When he isn't on, however, his stuff is mediocre at best. His control sometimes lapses, but that is usually in the 3rd or 4th inning of work. As a closer, he'll have to be sharp every day, but with proper coaching, he should be able to handle the job. He can throw 10-20 pitches a day, 5 games a week and keep his arm healthy, IMO.

Either way, this is an outstanding contract IMO. I think he could have commanded a lot more than that on potential alone if he tested FA. Yes, the incentives add up to a high price, but it would be worth it if he were to give you the innings. And only giving him one more year to get healthy is a positive sign as well. Great signing fro the Cubs!
