CINCINNATI — Cubs manager Dusty Baker held off Wednesday in commenting at length about his own contract status until the contract extension of general manager Jim Hendry gets done.
Look for the Cubs to announce Hendry’s new deal Saturday.
Coming into this season, both Baker and Hendry were entering the final seasons of their contracts.
“It’s premature for me to comment on that because I don’t think it’s done yet,” Baker said. “I’m not worried about mine. I’m glad for Jim big time. It’s just business as usual for me.”
Baker may negotiate his own deal with the Cubs this time if Hendry does as expected and offers Baker an extension. When Baker left San Francisco for Chicago in November 2002, his agent was Jeff Moorad, who now runs the Arizona Diamondbacks.
During spring training, Baker said he’d like to stay in Chicago. “Like I told you guys, I came here to do a job with a purpose, and nothing’s going to stop me and deter us from reaching our goal,” Baker reiterated Wednesday, referring to the World Series. “That’s why I came here.”
