I'm hoping for what Damon did last year...and he would do that for four years.
I don't mind them taking the risk, I just wouldn't have done it. Oh well.

Then out of fairness to the others you will be Slagathor.
there's always risk in any move, but what risk are speaking of specifically? They traded for a player with some MLB experience and a track record for a minor spect. I think you know as well as anyone that spects don't always turn out to be what you expect them to be.Originally Posted by Fishercat

Essentially. The risk is that the unproven may turn out to be (much) bigger than the proven. As long as he isn't Mike Schmidt, I'll be happy.

well, hey, the Sox did trade Bagwell for Larry Anderson and sold Ruth to the Yankees, so anything is possible.
The Indians had no 3B in the system, and Marte is a monster. The Red Sox had 3 more GMs than center fielders, and were in a win-now mode. The deal will easily give more value to Cleveland, but the Red Sox get what they want in the short term.
Sometimes you have to lose a deal long term to win a championship.
you think the Sox have a legitimate shot at a title this year?
I think the Sox may have a shot to get back to the World Series but it depends on a lot of things going positive for us... 1.) Schilling needs to back to his 2004 self after struggling last season after coming back from surgery 2.) Our bullpen has to hold up and pray that Foulke can also find his groove again after having a terrible year last season 3.) Can Coco Crisp suffice enough in Damon's absence at the leadoff spot? 4.) We have to Hope that Beckett doesn't have reoccuring blister problems... Also their are many other factors but as much as I would love to see the Red Sox get back to the World Series, right now its a bit hard to fathom. A lot of things will have to go well for us with the revamped Blue Jays and those damn Yankees.
"They asked me if I wanted the ball in Game 6, and I said yes. I'll always say yes. That's what I did with Jack McKeon. I told him, 'Let me see how I feel tomorrow.' I went out, did a long toss, came in and said, 'I'll pitch, I want it, I want to do it.' And it ended up working out." -Josh Beckett

I think the Red Sox have the best team in the division, still.
I do have to say the A's have the second best staff in the MLB next to the Chicago White Sox. I will also have to say that Billy Beane is the best general manager in all of baseball, he does a remarkable job given the team market the A's have. But, as for the Red Sox we have a lot of question marks on our team, if a lot of the issues I listed above can be solved I believe we will be a solid team.

still? They weren't even the best team in the division last year. They haven't been the best team in the division since 1995; the last time they won the division. I just think there are too many question marks with their pitching to say they are title contenders. If their starters are healthy and they get their bullpen straightened out, then yea, but right now no IMHO.Originally Posted by Saber
One could argue that they were the best team in the AL East last year. Same record, and then it depends on what you think is a more accurate tiebreaker: H2H W-L (which the Yankees won 10-9), Run Differential (Red Sox were 8 runs better), Playoff Results (Sox lost in 3, Yankees lost in 5). Take your pick.

They can make the playoffs, where anything can happen.
Except the A's winning. That won't happen.
