Sox add second year to Varitek offer | MLB.com: News
Why would they do this??? This boggles my mind. He's clearly going to be done with his career performance-wise after this year unless he makes an epic comeback, in which they could just resign him for more money again after the year anyways.Progress is being made in the Red Sox's bid to bring back Jason Varitek. A baseball source tells The Boston Globe that the Red Sox have made a contract offer to the veteran catcher and team captain. Without citing specifics, the report states the proposal given to Varitek's agent, Scott Boras, may include a second guaranteed season.
The paper says the Red Sox "could ensure Varitek a second year by guaranteeing it outright or making it attainable through an option."
Either way, after nearly three months, there is movement in the negotiations.
Varitek, who turns 37 on April 11, appeared in 131 games for Boston last year, batting .220 with 13 home runs and 43 RBIs. He has played in 1,330 games in a career that began with the Red Sox in 1997.
I also heard rumors that Texas is making progress with the Sox in talks for either Taylor Teagarden or Jarrod Saltalamacchia. If this was true, it makes this 2nd year even more ridiculous, because they absolutely won't need Varitek, even for maybe 1 year.
And anyways, it's not like he's going to get a better offer anywhere else. If he does...I'd let him take it, he's not worth THAT much to the Sox.
I tell you what...Scott Boras continues to boggle my mind with his abilities. I mean...there is NO reason that I can see for the Sox to give Tek a 2nd year. And somehow, he pulled it out.
