Dice-K has issues: Claims to be ‘struggling’ - Boston Red Sox - BostonHerald.comDaisuke Matsuzaka has been close to disgusted with himself after his last two spring training starts, despite the fact he has allowed only one hit in 10 innings.
Matsuzaka repeatedly referred to “struggling” after allowing only one hit in 5 2/3 innings in a 7-3 Red Sox [team stats] victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates in Bradenton, Fla., on March 21. On Monday, when he held the Cincinnati Reds hitless for five innings, the 26-year-old right-hander was so annoyed with himself for issuing five walks that he stood up more than 50 reporters waiting for him at a makeshift interview area in Sarasota, Fla.
The pitcher told Japanese reporters yesterday that his concentration was off against the Reds. Manager Terry Francona was almost amused that it was an issue.
“You’re going to have to get used to his being unhappy, with probably a really low ERA,” Francona quipped.
It would be easy to blame the former Seibu Lions ace’s behavior on his simply being a perfectionist, but it may also be the first outward indication of the frustrations involved with making the transition to the major leagues from the Japanese style of play. While Matsuzaka is typically animated and cheerful, he is going through a difficult career phase that requires major adjustments in the way he prepares.
