SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -- It can't be announced until tomorrow night, after the expansion draft, but major-league sources said last night that the Red Sox and Florida Marlins have struck a deal in which Boston will receive closer Robb Nen in exchange for top pitching prospect Carl Pavano and two minor leaguers.
The deal was agreed upon by Red Sox general manager Dan Duquette and Marlins general manager Dave Dombrowski late yesterday afternoon, sources said.
"As far as I know, nothing's done," Red Sox spokesman Kevin Shea said last night. "Dan's still talking with a number of clubs." The other players in the deal were not disclosed. The Marlins had asked about top third-base prospects Cole Liniak and Wilton Veras, and outfielder Dernell Stenson. All three are considered among Boston's top prospects.
