The Red Sox should have known better when he said it wasn't about the money because he said the same thing in KC and when it came down to it, it was about the money.

This was his last big contract, he's going for the money. If the dollars were close he would have stayed w/ the Sox.Originally Posted by Fishercat
Not fair enough as others were willing to pay him more, you have to pay him market value but the Sox have been about giving up still productive, popular players for no reason other than a few mil more which they can afford. That's right, he stated it "wouldn't be about money", then he turned around and made it about money... No integrity. Red Sox management made Damon a very fair offer, probably too generous in my estimation.
How exactly did the last bernie deal look foolish? He was a top player until about '02 or so and he signed his deal after the '98 season winning 2 more World Series and 4 more AL Titles. That was a great deal. Sure Damon's deal will look bad at the end but you deal w/ that, he was brought here to try to win now not 3 years from now. We'll see what you think of the Damon deal with the Yankees 2 years from now, I expect it will look as foolish as the last Bernie Williams deal.
So you'd rather give money to busts like Clement than to pedro? and pay Lowell's salary than pay for Damon? If Damon is not there it's 88 years and counting.
Lowell's salary is only being paid because he brought Beckett with him, and Lowell's doing better for less than Damon.
Bernie's deal looked bad at the end, as Damon's well should.
And Pedro's is the same way, we'll see what he looks like in Year Four of the deal, although it will be better than in Year Four of a Sox deal, as he is facing offensive juggarnauts like the Nats and Marlins now.
The Sox don't have a limitless revenue stream, and paying 13 million to Damon is foolhardy for the team.

Then out of fairness to the others you will be Slagathor.
You're way out of line here. You're completely overlooking Bernie's post season accomplishments, and the impact that those WS teams have had on ticket/merch sales for the Yankees. Bernie has generated income for the Yankees that has compensated his salary back two-fold.Originally Posted by Fishercat
Granted he hit the wall about mid-2002, but there's no one associated with the Yankees that would tell you that Bernie didn't earn his paycheck.
At the end, as I was comparing to Damon, at the end, and Pedro, at the end. Cripes, when I say at the end, the end was the last few years of the deal where he got 8 digits for sucking. The deal looked bad at the end. Christ.Originally Posted by Hmark6

Those contracts you guys are talking about only look good to a team that doesn't care how much it spends. Bernie Williams contract in 1999 was signed for 87.5 Million over 7 years. No doubt he was effective for 4 years, maybe even worth the 12.5 million per year he was making, the last 2 years of the deal, he was a 5 Million dollar or less type player, that leaves 15 million dollars of excess money on that contract that needs to be considered in the other years. So when you break that down over the 4 years that he was effective, that would mean he was making roughly $16.5 Million per year for those for years, I hardly think he was worth anything close to that, that's superstar money, which he certainly is not. We already have one contract on the Red Sox that is going to look stupid in a couple of years... Jason Varitek!!!! I like Varitek, and know we needed to keep him, but the 4th year of that deal is going to look really stupid.
