Even sadder to learn it was at his own hands, reportedly despondent over the criticism he has received from the community about the Orioles dismal performance in recent years.
Poor Jim Palmer and Buck Showalter visibly distraught in interviews. Heartbreaking for the family and the organization.
The speculation that he committed suicide over his performance as co-GM of the Orioles is absurd. If everyone who had failed under owner/miser Peter Angelos killed himself, the streets of Baltimore would be littered with bodies.
Sad day whenever you lose a true baseball man and that's what Flanagan was, a baseball lifer. He definitely had a full life in baseball terms earning a CY ward and winning a WS. Bummer for the O's and Flanagan family.
I was only stating what local journalists of the team, had reported, I have read and heard many comments from those with the team that he didn't seem right the past few weeks and looked physically terrible. Now the police have found financial records that suggest that he was having trouble with money and that could have been a contributing factor. Could be both and numerous other things piling on until one was the "final" straw. Since there has been no note found, speculations are all anyone can make for now.
No matter what the reason he must have been despondent enough to feel this was his only option, as the majority of people don’t blow their face off with a shotgun for a good time.
