Peter Gammons of ESPN.com has now confirmed that the Red Sox and Braves have completed the rumored Edgar Renteria-for-Andy Marte swap.
According to the report, an announcement of the deal is expected to come later today. No word yet on how much money, if any, is changing hands. The Red Sox likely aren't done dealing, with too many third basemen and not enough middle infielders.
Gordeon Edes of the Boston Globe reports, that the Edgar Renteria - Andy Marte deal will be finalized once Bud Selig signs off on the money that is being exchanged between the teams.
The Red Sox will be picking up a portion of the remianing $29 million on Renteria's 3-year contract - how much though is unknown at this time. The Red Sox are expected to look into signing a free agent shortstop(Nomar anyone?) rather construct a deal that would flip Andy Marte to Tampa Bay for Julio Lugo.
According to FOXSports.com's Ken Rosenthal, the Red Sox will pay about $11 million of the $29 million that Edgar Renteria is still owed in order to get Andy Marte.
It's worth it. Marte is that good of a prospect, clearly the best that the Red Sox have had in several years. The Red Sox have told the Braves that they will keep the third baseman.
Unless JS knows something about Marte that I don't, I don't like this trade at all.
