The deal will pay him per season more than Jose Abreu.

MLB rules I think is that a team maintains control for 6 years (3 at the min, 3 at arby numbers) anyways. I'm surprised MLBPA hasn't ever tried to reign in these kind of deals because many members are stuck making the min while these other guys get to skip through the wait and recieve big $ immediately.

I think there can be clauses added to contracts that function as a work around. I recall it happening with someone not too long ago.

I think there's a significantly higher risk with these deals though. Abreu was awesome and all. So too was Tanaka. But there's always a Kaz Matsui or Kei Igawa with these imports. At least a typical player can earn his way towards a big deal. These guys, if they bust, teams are stuck.

Cespedes signed a 4-year deal where he would become a FA after the 4th year (after this season actually) and the team isn't allowed to make a qualifying offer (no draft pick comp).

I loved what Keith Law said today on Olbermann of Tomas: Zero chance to play third base. He's built like Pablo Sandoval but with none of the athleticism at all.
