D'Backs Awkward slide results in Drew breaking his ankle

..in the same game in which Carlos Gomez broke his collar bone. NFL? No, BASEBALL BITCHES.

Arizona Diamondbacks' Stephen Drew breaks ankle, out for season - ESPN

Drew has had another mediocre season at the plate, so that shouldn't be hard to overcome. It'll be more difficult to replace his defense and experience. They're 4.5 back, so it'll be interesting to see if they pursue a rental or just live with a platter of Willie Bloomquist, Geoff Blum, and whatever else they find working at McDonald's.

I saw this live and it was disgusting, a lot worse than Posey's ankle injury. Not much out there for the DBacks to go get to replace Drew. It's NL West champs or nothing for the DBacks.

Guess it depends on how much better defensively Drew is over Bloomquist.

Olney only mentions Carroll, Furcal, and Clint Barmes as possible players available.

Stephen's broken ankle easily surpasses every one of his older brother's "injuries".

Re: Awkward slide results in Drew breaking his ankle

Keeping pace in the National League West got more difficult for the Arizona Diamondbacks after shortstop Stephen Drew fractured his right ankle sliding into home plate in Wednesday's loss to the Brewers.

Manager Kirk Gibson confirmed Drew is lost for the season, but didn't have any immediate answer on Drew's replacement. The most likely candidate is veteran Willie Bloomquist, while another possibility is the versatile Geoff Blum, who recently made his season debut following knee surgery.
The D-backs already are in the market for a reliever and a starting pitcher, and now must decide if they want to divert some of their resources for a shortstop. GM Kevin Towers might put in a call to his old club in San Diego to check in on the availability of Jason Bartlett. In his Big Board, ESPN Insider's Jim Bowden says the Padres would love to get out of the final year of Bartlett's contract that pays $5.5 million in 2012.

Is it any wonder that, while on my cell phone where I can't see which forum a thread is in in a new posts search, I automatically assumed this meant J.D.?

Because the Padres thought they could have another miracle season like they did last year without AGon for some reason. They did need a SS and they were probably hoping he would have a better season so they could get a chance to get some draft picks after he walked. Its the only reason I can see considering how much they gave up to get him.

To be fair, if the pitching hadn't fallen off they probably would have had another shot despite trading Adrian.

Pitching hasn't been the Padres problem.

But it still hasn't been as good as it was last year...and they need it to be that good to overcome the offense. They needed it to be that good last year as well even with Adrian.

Or maybe your GM should have addressed the lack of offense exacerbated by the loss of Adrian Gonzalez rather than rely on the pitching to be league best again.

I'm thinking the GM wasn't planning on competing this year or he wouldn't have traded Adrian in the first place.
